Obituary of William T. Schafer

Woodworker, volunteer, Coast Guard veteran, William T. Schafer, 70, of Washington died suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009. Visitation is on Thursday, March 5, 2009, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 W. Washington Ave., Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 6, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 127 Broad St., Washington, with Fr., Robert Criste-Troutman officiating. Born on Nov. 4, 1938, in Orange to the late Theodore and Margaret Schafer, Bill grew up in West Orange and was a resident of Washington for 15 years. He was a graduate of the West Orange High School Class of 1957. He served proudly in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years. He was a self-employed woodworker. Bill loved everything about the outdoors, especially hiking and camping in the mountains. He hiked the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. In the past, he volunteered as an EMT and more recently with the Adventure Crew, Boy Scouts. Nothing was more important to Bill than his love of family and friends. Surviving are his loving wife of 17 years, Pamela E. Schafer; son, Theodore Schafer and his wife, Deanna, of Howell, and son, Will, and daughter, Elizabeth, both at home; a sister, Emiley Johnson of Upstate, N.Y., and three grandchildren, Rebecca, Gustauf and Heidi.
