Obituary of Simon Henry Barends

Simon Henry Barends, 78, of Washington, NJ passed away peacefully on August 11, 2019 at the Brakely Park Center He was born on June 14, 1941 in Rotterdam, Netherlands to the late Dirk and Mathilda Barends. Henry moved to Port Colden, NJ from the Netherlands in 1951. He graduated from Washington high school class of 1960. He earned his education degree from Trenton State College. Henry married his high school sweetheart Johann LaPorta in 1960. He worked as a corrections officer and later as a vocational Carpentry and Print Shop Instructor at the Mountain View Corrections facility in Annandale, NJ. He also owned and operated a carpet and flooring company in Washington. Henry was a 3rd place finalist at NJ high school wrestling state tournament. He was a volunteer for the Washington Y wrestling Club and as a Washington Boro Redskins football coach for 25 years. Henry cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Henry is survived by his loving wife, of 60 years Johann; a daughter, Lisa Wahler and her husband Frank; Sons, Brian Barends and his wife Sharon and Mark Barends; A sister, Shawn Atkinson and a brother, Ben Barends. Grandchildren Justin and Daniel Barends. Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday August 16, 2019 from 2-4 PM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home. 234 W. Washington Ave. Washington, NJ. A Memorial service celebrating Henry's life will be held immediately following at 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
