Obituary of Philip Kinney

Philip J. Kinney Sr., 91, of Oxford, NJ passed away peacefully on May 2, 2018 at Heath Village in Hackettstown, NJ.

Phil was born on July 13, 1926 in Scranton, PA to the late James and Alice Kinney.  He spent his childhood summers in Oxford, NJ with his grandparents. He was a graduate of Scranton High School and went on to further his education at Scranton University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1950. Phil proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII.  He worked for the Tuberculosis Society in Scranton, PA and retired as Manager of the Actuarial Department for Prudential Insurance in Newark, NJ. Phil was of the Catholic faith and a parishioner of St Theodore’s Roman Catholic Church.  He was a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Washington, New Jersey, Council No. 5170 and former President of The Holy Name Society and a former Lector at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Washington, NJ. Phil enjoyed Fly fishing and Jazz music.  He also was a member of the Pennsylvania Jazz Society.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Jeanne B. Szamreta, his loving son Philip J. Kinney Jr. and his wife Mary Ann. His treasured grandson, Philip Kinney III and his wife Mia.  His caring brother James, and extended family Ben Szamreta and his wife Elizabeth and Kristine Santilli and her husband Paul.  He is preceded in death by his 1st wife of 35 years Alice who passed in 1986 and a brother John and sister Mary.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 6-8 PM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 W. Washington Ave., Washington, NJ 07882.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 10:30 AM at St. Theodores Roman Catholic Church, 855 State Hwy Route 57, Port Murray, NJ 07865. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Washington, NJ.

In lieu of flowers donations, may be made in Phil’s name to St. Theodores Roman Catholic Church, 855 State Hwy Route 57, Port Murray, NJ 07865.
