It was at Woodbridge High School in the mid-50’s when Bill and I first met Alidia van Slyke (English literature) who introduced us to “the term”. We had little understanding of the meaning of “the term”, nonetheless, we memorized the definition to pass Friday’s quiz, then continued on with our dissection of Shakespeare’s plays. During our college years (and well afterwards) I noticed Bill, a superb conversationalist, had a unique character trait: he possessed a broad knowledge base that made him entertaining and engaging, irrespective of the social situation or composition of the audience. He could transition easily between apparently unrelated subjects: from a discussion of “Richard II” and relate it to Hudson County politics; from the geologic composition of South Jersey soil to the best bait for shad fishing in the Delaware; from Nabisco’s give-away sales promotions to the Yalta Conference that gave Europe to Stalin. It was about 30 years after van Slyke’s English class that I final realized I knew a living example of “the term”. It was Bill; “the term”, “Renaissance” man.
Although saddened by his passing, I can hear the Sargent Major commanding us to not “sit upon the ground and tell sad stories of the death of kings”. Rather, I imagine him seated at the long table in Valhalla, enjoying a stein of mead, surrounded by his fellow-warriors and quipping, “On the whole, I’d rather be in Philadelphia”. Save me a place at the table, my friend.

Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. We are honored to have known Bill who was a director for many years in our chapter. He will be remembered for always being the first to volunteer for all of our projects; his favorite being fishing education for our younger potential anglers.

We send you our heartfelt sympathy at your loss. Bill was alway a strong personality full of life for the things he loved - the outdoors, fishing and teaching others about fishing.
His suffering is over and he is at peace. There will be many memories and those he knew and touched awhile in life will be left behind with fond memories.
With love and sympathy
John and Julie

Bill,
I am going to miss you at the pond. We always had a few good laughs while waiting for a class to
start. Working with you was always a pleasure.
Rest in Peace, my friend.
