Obituary of Norma C Wilson
Norma Carmichael Wilson, 87, of Pompton Plains, NJ, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2015 at Chilton Medical Center.
Norma was born in 1928 in Plainfield, NJ to parents David and Irma (Mowen) Carmichael.
She graduated from Verona High School in Verona, NJ in 1945 and enrolled at the University of Vermont. While there, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and worked for the school newspaper, The Vermont Cynic. She graduated in 1949 with her bachelor’s degree in English. This chapter began a lifelong love and devotion to her alma mater and the state of Vermont.
Upon graduation, Norma moved back to New Jersey and worked for New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. In 1951, she married David N. Wilson and together, they raised four children in Morristown, NJ.
Norma was a devoted volunteer at her church, as well as various civic organizations in her community. She served as a Deacon for The Presbyterian Church in Morristown and was a member and served as President of her area PEO chapter, a philanthropic organization that promotes education for women. She was a member of Twigs, a branch of the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center; a volunteer for Morristown Meals on Wheels; and a Girl Scout leader. As a child of the Depression era, Norma was dedicated to those who were less fortunate and she showed it through her service at Morris View, a county medical and nursing facility for area residents on limited incomes. Norma also continued to support her alma mater, the University of Vermont, by serving on several of her reunion committees.
In addition to her service, she was an avid gardener, as well as an accomplished cook and baker. She was considered the consummate host and often entertained her family and friends. Born an only child, there was nothing Norma loved more than spending time with her husband, her children, and her many grandchildren. She would often vacation with her large family in Vermont.
She is survived by her son, Scott and daughter-in-law Teresa (Di Martino); daughter, Cindy Wilson O'Neill and son-in-law Jim; daughter, Kimberley Wilson and her fiancé Gordon Long; and son, Bruce and daughter-in-law, Karen (Schmid); her sister-in-law, Ruth Wilson Withers; ten grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews and many cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, David N. Wilson.
A memorial service will celebrate Norma’s life at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 2015, at The First Presbyterian Church, 40 East Church St., Washington, NJ 07882.
