Obituary of George K. Warne

George K. Warne, 76, of Washington, passed away peacefully at Morristown Medical Center, September 25, 2012. Born: September 19, 1936 in Harmony, NJ, son of the late Kenneth and Hazel Warne. Personal: George was a resident of Washington for 49 years. George retired from Taylor Street School in Washington. He taught sixth grade and the gifted and talented. In 1985 he was awarded Warren County Teacher of the Year. He retired in 1992. George graduated from Washington High School class of 1954, he received a BS in 1960 and M. ED. in 1970 from Rutgers University. George was a US Army veteran, serving in the Adjutant General's Corps as a courier out of the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. Upon discharge he had obtained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was an avid reader, interested in ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek history and Greek mythology. He researched family history and genealogy. George was considered a gourmet cook by his friends and family. Memberships: George and his wife Patricia were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Washington. George was instrumental in the grassroots of many volunteer organizations. He was involved in and worked toward the creation of the Country Gate Players. He chaired the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission for 15 years, and has written and edited a number of articles and books relating to Warren County. During his tenure as commissioner of the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission, he founded the Warren County Community Singers. George was involved in the research for the restoration of Shippen Manor in Oxford, NJ and instrumental in the restoration of the Manor. He helped organize and coordinate the Oxford, NJ Heritage Days to coincide with celebrations and activities at the Manor. He was a contributor of the Encyclopedia of New Jersey, writing for the publication a history of Warren County. During research of a college paper on Thomas Warne, Proprietor of NJ, he discovered the Peggy Warne Herb House which is located in Broadway, NJ. George participated on the Centennial Book Committee for Washington, NJ in 1968 and contributed to the planning of the centennial celebration. Survivors: His devoted wife of 53 years, Patricia; a daughter, Tamara Warne; two sons, Darren Warne and Lawrence Warne and his wife Holly; one brother, Harold Warne; and a granddaughter, Dawn. Services: A private graveside service will be held at Montana Mountain Cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Warren County Community Singers, P.O. Box 202, Washington, NJ 07882. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Warren Hills Memorial Home,
