Obituary of Charles R. Hubbard

Charles "Whitey" Hubbard, 85, a lifelong resident of Washington, New Jersey passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Born: January 3, 1923, in Washington, NJ to the late Henry & Marjorie Hubbard. Personal: Whitey was a proud World War II Veteran who served 6 years in the United States Navy, and was later assigned to the 1st Marine Division during the Guadalcanal Campaign. He completed his tour of duty with the PT Gunboat squadron 11 in the Philippines. Whitey worked as a licensed Master Plumber where he initially began his career with Majors Plumbing in Washington, and later developed his own business as Hubbard's Plumbing and Heating. Whitey also established a small part time knife business at his home. He retired in 2000. Whitey graduated from Washington H S. Class of 1940. Whitey enjoyed his yearly fishing trips to Canada. He was a devoted New York Yankees Fan. Later in his life he enjoyed spending his mornings at Guys Gas Station and Countryside Luncheonette, where he could be found among friends discussing Washington History, but above all Whitey enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who he cherished very much. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him. Memberships: Whitey was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Washington NJ. Whitey served in several municipal capacities that included Borough Council and Deputy Mayor. He was a past member of Washington Boro Fire Dept for 31 years serving as Chief in 1976 & 1977. Whitey was an honorary member of the Washington Emergency Squad serving as Captain from 1960-61. As a member of the Masonic Lodge, Whitey enjoyed being on the Mason Bowling League. Whitey was also a member of the VFW Pohatcong Memorial Post 6701. He was also a member of the Hunterdon Hills Rod & Gun Club. Survivors: His loving wife of 57 years, Luella; 2 daughters, Bonnie Onembo and her husband James, and Joanie Ziegler and her husband Pence both of Broadway; a sister, Marjorie Webber of Wharton NJ; 6 Grandchildren, Royale, Chyna, Jasa, Kyle, Clint and Zana. A brother, William and a sister, Lenora predeceased Whitey. Services: Visitation will be held Tuesday from 12-3 PM & 6-9 PM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home 234 West Washington Ave, Washington, NJ. 07882. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10am with Pastor James Scovell Officiating in the Warren Hills Memorial Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Hackettstown.
