Obituary of Dorothy B Young

Dorothy Belle Edwards Young left this life on October 11, 2020, to join the love of her life, Charles Young, in the hereafter. She was born January 23 or 24 or 25 in 1927 (born during a 3 day blizzard-no one remembered which day) the second of 9 children born to Frank and Sadie Belle Petrie Edwards in East Palestine, Ohio. Growing up during the Depression meant the family moved to wherever Dad could find work so she spent parts of her childhood in East Palestine, Ohio; Pittsburgh PA; Moonrun, PA; Washington, NJ; Port Colden, NJ; and Port Murray, NJ. She attended elementary schools in each town, and attended Hackettstown High School. Because there were so many mouths to feed at home, she quit school to help support the family. She worked at the old Murphy's 5 & 10 and Charlie's restaurant in Washington where she met her future husband, Charles Young, who was stationed on Montana Mountain at an army communication installation. On their first date, she upset a canoe in which they were sailing on Mountain Lake. He married her anyway on April 19, 1946. They lived in Hillside, NJ for a few years and then moved to Washington. For many years she was a stay at home Mom but did volunteer work in the Washington Township School District where she worked in both Brass Castle and Port Colden school libraries. Eventually, she was hired as an uncertified school librarian and work there until her retirement in 2004. She was an active member of the PTA and was in charge of arranging book fairs and 6th grade graduation dinners. Because of her work for the PTA she was given life membership. She also served on the Washington Boro Library Council for a short time. She was a past member of the Western Knights Dance Club and a current member of the Oxford Furnace Young at Heart Club. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, traveling, playing bingo, doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, visiting casinos, and playing cards with her brother-in-law (much to her grandmother's disgust) on a Sunday afternoon. She is survived by her children, Pam Young (Washington, NJ), Charles and Darla Young (Nazareth, PA), and Robert and Noreen Young (Hamilton Square, NJ) and grandchildren, Mathew and Elizabeth Young (Philadelphia, PA) Jessica and Jon Dearolf (East Windsor, NJ) and Shane Young (Hamilton Square, NJ). Also surviving are siblings Robert and Wilma Edwards, Virginia and Lowell Smith, June Mayberry, and John and Helen Edwards and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Jimmy, Buddy and Tommy, her sister Ruth Gross, and brothers in law Carl Mayberry and Kenny Gross. Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday, October 15, 2020 from 10-11:30 AM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home. 234 W. Washington Ave. Washington, NJ 07882. Funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 11:30 in the funeral home. Burial will take place at Washington Cemetery, Washington, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy's name to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Boulevard, Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852-9813 Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Warren Hills Memorial Home.
