Obituary of Gloria May Hourihan
Gloria May Hourihan, 93 formerly of Washington, NJ and New Providence, NJ passed away peacefully at Heath Village nursing home in Hackettstown, NJ on December 28, 2019.
Gloria was born in Elizabeth, NJ to the late William and Frances Queen. Christened Rara by her first grandchild, she was a member of the rapidly passing “Greatest Generation", her life spanning nearly a century; from the Roaring 20's through the Twitter 2010's.
Gloria graduated from Thomas Edison high school in Elizabeth class of 1944. She was employed at NY Life in New Providence and as a bookkeeper at Pine Acres Nursing home in Madison before leaving in 1993 to care for her grandchildren during a period of family illness, after which she retired. Her loving husband Eugene F Hourihan passed away in 1984. Gloria enjoyed shopping (and returning most of the items purchased), was a collector of clocks (having at one time 10 in her one bedroom apartment - she was never late for anything) and loved potting plants and arranging window boxes on her deck. She prided herself on her skill driving an automobile - motoring past 90 - and was always available to drive neighbors and acquaintances to appointments and the market.
Gloria is survived by a son, Peter Hourihan and his wife Mary, of Washington NJ; 2 grandchildren, Peter Hourihan Jr. of Stroudsburg, Pa and Margaret Helen Hourihan of Los Angelas, CA. Her loving husband Eugene F Hourihan passed away in 1984. In addition to her husband Gloria was preceded in death by a son, Richard B. Hourihan; Sisters, Mitzi Queen and Joyce Hunt and a brother, William Queen.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday January 2, 2020 from 4-6PM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home. 234 W. Washington Ave. Washington, NJ 07882. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday January 3, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Church. 200 Carlton Ave. Washington, NJ 07882. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gloria’s name to the Heath Village Employee's Appreciation Fund, 430 Schooleys Mountain Rd, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.
