Obituary of Emma Gardner Demarest

Emma Gardner Demarest, 96, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 14, 2010 on her family farm in Franklin Township. Born: January 22, 1914 in Patterson, NJ she was a daughter of the late James and Ida Duryea. Personal: A life-long resident of the Franklin Township area, Emma owned and operated a beauty shop in Asbury for 15 years from 1972-1991. She owned and operated Emma's Beauty Shop in Hampton ; and worked as a hairstylist for Ford Funeral Home in Washington . She also worked as the sole beautician at Warren Haven Nursing Home. She graduated from Montclair High School class of 1932. She worked for the Warren County Election Board from 1974-2004. Emma enjoyed gardening and crocheting rugs. She loved spending time with her family. Emma spent many years researching and gathering genealogy about her family's history. Memberships: She was a member of Changewater Methodist Church . She was a past member of the Franklin Twp PTA. Survivors: Three sons, Lester R. Gardner and his wife Edith of Virginia, Robert E. Gardner and his wife Joann and Richard D. Gardner and his wife Janette, all of Asbury; three step-sons, Jack Demarest, Fred Demarest and Jim Demarest; a stepdaughter Joan Donovan; a brother Frank Duryea of Changewater; two sisters, Margaret Howell of Washington and Ida Kendick of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren, Kristen, Daniel, Stephanie, Kathleen and Patrick; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband Lester Gardner in 1972, her second husband Burdette Demarest in 2001, and a granddaughter Lisa Gibson. Services: Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday July 19, 2010 at Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 West Washington Ave., Washington, with the funeral service to follow at 8 p.m. with Pastor James Scovell officiating. Cremation will be private. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 W. Washington Ave., Washington, NJ 07882.
