John B. LaPorta, 90 of Washington Twp, NJ died on Monday March 2, 2009 in Hospice of VNA, Bethlehem, PA. Born: May 28, 1918 in Bayonne, NJ. Son of the late Frank & Angelina LaPorta. Personal: John worked for the US Dept of Labor for 32 years. He was founding President of the Board of Trustees for Warren County Community College. Past President of the Warren County Vo-Tech School and served on the board for more than 40 years. Past Police Commissioner for Washington Twp Police Dept & Past Mayor for Washington Twp. Honorable Discharge from the Army as a Sgt. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Philippine Liberation Medal with 3 Bronze Battle Stars. Memberships: John was a life long member of St. Joseph's Church in Washington NJ where he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and served as an Usher. Survivors: He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anastasia "Stasyshan" LaPorta; Two sons, John LaPorta Jr. of Northampton, PA. Frank LaPorta and his wife Hope of Washington NJ; Three daughters Johann Barends and her husband Henry of Washington NJ, Elaine Burd and her husband John of White Township NJ, and Kathleen Devoto of Princeton NJ. Six grandsons, Douglas, Michael, Frank Jr., Brian, Mark and Matthew; two granddaughters, Carrie Ann & Lisa; four great-grandchildren, Justin, Daniel, Ryan & Katina; one brother Michael LaPorta & his wife Sandy of Hellertown PA. He was predeceased by two sisters, Anne Beisel of Washington, NJ and Mary Thorne of Easton PA. Services: Sunday March 8, 2009, 3 to 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus services will be held at 5 p.m. American Legion Services will be held at 6 p.m. At Warren Hills Memorial Home. 234. W. Washington, Ave. Washington, NJ 07882. FUNERAL SERVICES, Monday March 9, 2009, 11 a.m. service with Fr. Blaise Baran Officiating . Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Washington, NJ.
