Obituary of John P Kappus

John P. Kappus, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on January 7, 2025. Born on February 11, 1948, he was the son of the late Paul J. and Bertha Kappus. John lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and dedication to his family and friends. His warm heart and unwavering generosity touched the lives of many, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade during the Vietnam War, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Parachutist Badge; Combat Infantryman Badge; two Purple Hearts; Marksman (.45 Pistol); Expert (Rifle M-14); Marksman (Rifle M-16) and Sharpshooter (M-60 MG). Following his military service, John was instrumental in helping establish Kappus Plastic Company, Inc., in Hampton. As one of the former owners, John earned respect for his work ethic and commitment, retiring after 44 years. John was raised in Whitehouse Station and moved to Illinois where he met and married to his beloved wife, Catherine "Cathy" (Baines). John credited Cathy for her unwavering support and patience during the 55 years of marriage. They resided in Washington, New Jersey and together, they raised four children and created a home filled with love and cherished memories. An avid reader, John also enjoyed hiking, trains, and family vacations on Long Beach Island. In addition to his devotion to his family, he was deeply committed to serving his community, exemplifying his selflessness and commitment to helping others. John dedicated over 37 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Washington Township Fire Department and was a former Fire Chief. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Washington Township Fire District. A long-time member of the Glen Gardner VFW Post 5119, John served as Post Chaplain and Post Quartermaster. He also volunteered extensively with the ARC of Warren County, serving on the Board of Directors and dedicating countless hours to enhancing Camp Warren in Knowlton Township. John is survived by his loving wife, Catherine, and their four children: Alycia Crespin and her husband Matt and daughter Casey, James Kappus, Bernadette Kappus, and Ryan Kappus. Brothers Thomas (Tracey), Noel (Theresa), and Robert (Cheryl). Sisters Annette (Mark) Gormly, Kathleen (Gerd) Plenkers and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother Paul. A memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 200 Carlton Ave, Washington, NJ 07882. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Abilities of Northwest Jersey, Washington Township Fire Department (Warren County) and the VFW in Glen Gardner. John's memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
