I was thinking I met Rik in Jr. high, but in talking with my husband, I realized I actually knew him much longer than that. He remembered that Rik’s dad bought him a go cart early on, and he would drive it in the Pleasantville Shopping center parking lot (until he wrecked it!) That reminded me that his dad was the flag man at the Atlantic City Racetrack and his mom worked in the stand. My dad raced. What fun times!!! We lost touch after high school, but reconnected through Penny in the last few years. Always a smile….. May you rest in peace, in the hands of the Lord.

Dear, Ms. Penny and the Atkinson Family,
I am saddened by the news of Walter’s passing. We worked together at his recent company, he always lit up the room, told the best stories and gave the best advise. Walter was one of the first people I met when I started my career and I will always be grateful for the impact he left on me and others around him. He will be missed. Condolences and keeping you all in my prayers.

To Rik's family... I had the pleasure of working with and learning from Rik for many years when he was a process manager at Roche and later on when he consulted to improve our processes. Yes, he was a professional who worked very well with others and helped us all improve. Yes, he had a bright smile and contagious laugh that elevated us in good times and bad. His only fault was that he was a Philadelphia sports fan. But my outstanding memory of Rik is how he spoke so proudly and lovingly of you, Penny, and the life you were continuing to build together. He was supremely proud of his children and the fine people they were becoming. He reminded us all that these were the important things in life. I'll remember Rik best not as a business colleague but as a family man. I wish for Rik to rest in peace and that your memories of happier times with him soon replace your grief at his loss. Peace be unto you.

Rik Atkinson’s innate kindness, humor, total absence of malice, and nearly constant smile, made him possibly, THE nicest guy there ever was. His love of his family and friends (and of course Philadelphia sports teams) was undeniable, and his passing leaves all who knew him with a terrible void. Jon and I sincerely hope Penny and families, have enough North and South Jersey memories to help you all through this saddest of times. He will always remain so so dear in all of our hearts too-wishing you peace.

Penny and Family, thinking of you during this time. May the memories of Rik, your Dad, and Grand Rik keep you smiling. Because Rik had the best smile ever and he was always smiling. He truly loved his family. Watch for a sign from him. Love you.

Rik was our neighborhood's best friend. He gave treats to dogs passing by--pulling their owners by a leash. He always stopped what he was doing to talk and share his beautiful smile. He will be missed and rounding the corner of Valley Road will never be the same. His spirit will live on in all the people whose lives he touched.
Our hearts break for Penny and the kids. You have the distinction of being Rik Atkinson's children and grandchildren--a grand role model to live up to.
