Obituary of James Reed

James "JR" Reed, 68, previously of Washington Township, NJ passed away peacefully on December 28, 2022 in Raleigh, NC. Jim was born March 6, 1954 in Dover, NJ to the late Cecil and Muriel "Terwillegar" Reed, Sr. He graduated from West Morris High School, Class of 1972. He received an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Morris County Community College. Jim married his loving wife Linda "Fentzlaff" in 1978. Jim was employed as a Sr. Corrections Officer at the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in Annandale, NJ for more than 27 years before retiring in 2003. Jim was a member of the Mansfield Lodge No. 36. He played softball for many years in the Washington/Mansfield Softball League. Jim also enjoyed bowling with the Tuesday Night Bowling League at Oakwood Lanes. He played golf with the Wednesday Golf League at Fairway and also with family and friends, especially enjoying the Father's Day golf outing with friends and their sons. He enjoyed his daily workouts at Gibsons Gym and socializing over a cold beer at Felix's Tavern. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. In 2016, Jim and his wife moved to North Carolina to be close to their daughter and her family, especially grandsons Reed and Nathan. They were his joy. Every year he and his family would travel to Ocean City, NJ for their annual vacation that they had been doing since 1979. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends when he visited Washington, which would always be his "home." And even though he had moved out of the area, he always watched his Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Michigan, and UNC. Jim is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Linda; a daughter, Amy Cowan and her husband Richard; sisters, Margaret Seawell, Grace Beam, and Brenda Mikaliunas; brothers, Cecil "Butch" Reed, Jr., William Reed and Paul Reed; two grandchildren, Reed Cowan and Nathan Cowan, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Middaugh. Family and friends may pay their respects on Saturday May 27, 2023 from 9:30 – 11:30 AM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home. 234 W. Washington Ave. Washington, NJ 07882. It will conclude with a brief service at 11:30. The funeral will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy V Foundation.
